This is my own dissertation about poetry I wrote it last year and Mr.Selmi corrected it to me.I hope that it'll help you.
Alienation and loneliness in Prufrock's poem:
(Introduction):
Ts Eliot's early poetry has been described as a journey into the psyche of modern man.He portrays his hoplesness and hollowness. His early poetic works "The Love Song Of J.Alfred Prufrock" and "Hollow Men" express modern man's anguish and barreness. Both poems, portray the personae's inner agonies-Prufrock and The Hollow Men.They also draw on a wide range of cultural reference to depict a modern world that is in ruin-a world where chaos and anarchy prime. What characterizes modern man's life is a common sense of frailties ,sorrows ,and emptiness-frailty is portrayed in Prufrock's self contempt as he is thin and his physical appearance has betrayed him before women.
(Body):
In "The Love Song Of J.Alfred Prufrock", Ts.Eliot expresses
his view that human life is sorrowfull, debased, trivial, and fragmented.Where
Prufrock, the persona,is unable of expressing himself,he is like
"a patient etherised upon a table".Moreover,Eliot deals with the psychological conflicts of sensitive persona living in a closed, lifless world-a world of meaningless, hoplesness, and emptiness-where humans inhabit it"half deserted streets/ saw dust restaurants".The speaker is confined to hell where there is only sorrowness much like "Da Monte Feltro".The poem, indeed,is about the twenteeth century man as condamned to a living hell.It is not life, yet death-in-life.Furthermore,Prufrock yearns to escape from the fulfillment and sorrow of the earthly life.Life also is characterized as sterile, bleak, and repetitive. The dying process is taking place in Eliot's poetry both mentely and spiritaly. One can see that the experience of Prufrock in The Love Song Of J.Alfred Prufrock is not only his experience but a dilemma of a whole generation.
Likewise,The Hollow Men deals with the impersonal-a representation of all human alienation and fragmentation. The poem portrays mankind suffering from sorrow, hollowness, social, and cultural pains. The poem also presents a sense of holesness. It is a meditation on the speaker's inner emptiness. An emptiness caused by the condition of the modern world-a world in which men live only for themselves [color=Sienna]"paralysed force, gesture without motion".So,mankind has been unfulfilled in an empty ,sorrowful, and meaningless world. The Hollow Men evokes a sense of hoplesness within society assuring that follow men will get lost in it or be defeated by it.Eliot's poetry is characterized by symbolizm-a representation of human alienation and fragmentation. In addition,The Hollow Men deals with death-the death of an old life and the hope of a new one.It also expresses that humanity live in a kingdom of death where there is only deatg, sorrow, and unhappiness[color:1679=Sienna:1679]"eyes I dare notmeet in dreams/In death's dream kingdom".Eliot deals with the state of stagnation and frailty of the shallow men. They can neither choose life nor death and are damned to a life where they will waste away to nothing.Their emptiness is a shallowness of pure mind detached from any reality. They are, indeed, detached from one another, from nature in a spiritually devoted place-which characterizes the life of modern man "A dead land/Cactus land".
(Conclusion):
Thus, Ts.Eliot early poetry reveals modern man's agonies and pains. It
deals with deep emotional problems on the psyche of the civilized man who wantsto fight off his misfortunes, sorrows, and frailities.Indeed, The Love Song Of J.Alfred Prufrock and The Hollow Men represent confinement and claustrophobia-the personae are representatives of our hopeless and meaningless world.
